Rediscovering Joy in the Holiday Season

The first year after my divorce was undoubtedly the most challenging, and it felt like the holiday joy had completely vanished. However, I made a commitment to myself to rediscover happiness, even if it meant creating new traditions with my kids and fostering a stronger bond with our tweens and teens in the process.

10 Holiday Traditions for Single Moms

1. Glide on Ice Together

Ice skating is a popular winter activity that the whole family can enjoy. Bundle up and head to your local rink for an afternoon of fun.

2. Craft Gingerbread Houses

This is a fantastic holiday tradition to partake in with others, especially those close to you. First, visit your local craft store and purchase gingerbread house kits so that you have everything required for the project ready. It’s crucial to have all materials ahead of time! Not only is this activity something teenagers and tweens will love – they get to be creative with decorating the houses however they want – but afterward, they also get to enjoy eating their work! What could be better?

3. Cozy Movie Marathon

Pick out some of your all-time favorite holiday movies and have a marathon viewing session together. Pop some popcorn or our holiday tradition Carmel Corn and make it a cozy day in.

4. Attend a Festive Concert or Show

There are always holiday-themed concerts and shows happening around this time of year. Check out what’s happening in your area and treat your family to a festive night out.

5. Handmade Cards for Loved Ones

This is a great way to get into the holiday spirit and spread some cheer to those you love. Sit down together and create one-of-a-kind cards for everyone on your list.

6. Bake and Bond

What would the holidays be without some delicious baking? Whip up some of your family’s favorite recipes and enjoy the fruits of your labor together.

7. Deck the Halls

Get into the holiday spirit by decking out your home with all kinds of festive décor. Put up a tree, string up some lights, and get creative with your indoor Christmas decorations this year.

8. Christmas Lights Tour

This is one of my family’s favorites. It’s a great way to enjoy quality time together while getting out of the house. Grab some hot cocoa, hop in the car, turn on the Christmas tunes, and tour around your neighborhood in search of the best Christmas light displays.

9. Teach the Gift of Giving

The holidays are also a time for giving back. Teach your kids the importance of helping others by donating toys or clothes they no longer use to those less fortunate.

10. Capture Memories with a Festive Photo Shoot

Capture the memories of this holiday season by having a fun-themed photo shoot with your kids. You can even make it an annual tradition so that you can look back on how much they’ve grown each year
